The Rensselaer County incident happened at around 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18 in Troy’s Lansingburgh neighborhood, near 7th Avenue and 124th Street.

According to city officials, a 30-inch cast iron water main running along 124th Street broke somewhere between 6th and 7th avenues.

The water main was installed in 1916 and is one of the two major distribution lines flowing from the water treatment plant.

In a photo shared by the city, a significant amount of water can be seen flowing down the residential street, covering sidewalks and yards, and reaching to the top of car tires in spots.

As a result, a Boil Water Advisory is in effect for the "Low Service Area," which includes the Lansinburgh, Pleasantdale, North Central, Downtown, and South Troy neighborhoods.

Residents are advised to conserve water until service is restored.

“As DPU (Department of Public Utilities) works to restore service, residents may experience service interruptions, including sputtering water, loss of water, loss of water pressure, discolored water, or more,” the city said.

Residents should also prepare for the possibility of basement flooding and additional road closures.

After-school activities at the Lansingburgh School District have been canceled for Monday afternoon.

The DPU, along with the Department of Public Works, Engineering, and other city agencies are responding to the scene.

City officials warned against driving on flooded roadways.
